Sikh Wedding Photography Birmingham: From Anand Karaj to Joyful Celebrations

A Sikh wedding ceremony at Nanaksar Gurdwara Walsall features a couple and guests standing together during Ardaas.

Hey there, wedding fans! Here at Harvest Creative Media, we love capturing the Sikh weddings. Today, we’re taking you on a vibrant journey through a Sikh wedding celebration that overflowed with joy, colour, and timeless traditions. It was a diverse Indian wedding with Sikh and Gujarati traditions mixed. Want to learn about Gujarati wedding traditions?

The West Midlands, and especially Birmingham, is home to a vibrant Sikh community. It has the highest Sikh population in the U.K., with over 23 stunning Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) for Gurdwara ceremonies. We have had the privilege to capture weddings in most of those Gurdwaras. For this particular wedding, the couple chose Nanaksar Gurdwara, Walsall, for their Anand Karaj, followed by a grand reception at Manor Grove, Handsworth, Birmingham.

Wedding Day: The Vibrant Morning Preparations Photography

The day began with the bride and groom’s preparations. There are many occasions where we experienced the traditions from both cultures and religions.

The couple’s outfits were a visual highlight. The bride’s outfit, adorned with intricate golden embroidery. Her golden jewelry—layered necklaces, chandelier earrings, and an ornate tikka—adds to her regal charm.  Her detailed henna art and vibrant red bangles complete the look.

The groom, adorned in traditional Punjabi wedding attire, radiated elegance and pride. He paired his meticulously embroidered sherwani with a vibrant red turban and matching stole, adding a regal touch to his outfit.

As an Indian wedding photographer, capturing these intimate moments was a privilege. The joy and anticipation in the air are palpable, and these smaller traditions lay the foundation for the day’s larger events.

The Grand Entrance: Baraat in Full Swing

The groom’s arrival, or Baraat, was a spectacle of joy. The groom was accompanied by Dhol, an Indian band, and lively dancing. The energy was infectious, with family members and friends dancing in the Barat.

These moments are generally fast-paced and full of movement, requiring quick thinking and an eye for detail to capture the infectious energy. Those moments were captured in documentary photography style with minimal interruption. Have a look at our documentary photography style page.

Majestic Sikh Wedding: The Anand Karaj Ceremony

The heart of the wedding was Anand Karaj at the local Nanaksar Gurdwara in Walsall. The serene atmosphere, with the Guru Granth Sahib as the centrepiece, highlighted the spiritual essence of the day. A large number of T&S’s family and friends attended the wedding. Together, the couple took four lavans around the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh holy scripture) four times.

Photographing this part required sensitivity and attention to detail. The focus was capturing the couple’s expressions during the Lavan, the solemnity of the Ardass, and the warmth of the family sitting together in the Gurdwara’s peaceful setting. It was a great pleasure to assist the bride’s family on a number of occasions to perform various Sikh ceremonies, as the bride side didn’t know much about Sikh traditions.

Post-Wedding Photoshoot

Handsworth Park was a convenient place for the post-wedding photography because it was relatively close to the wedding reception venue. The photoshoot allowed the couple to relax and enjoy a quieter moment amidst the celebrations.

The couple’s civil wedding shoot was at Swan Pool—Sandwell Valley Country Park, which was very close to the couple’s heart with many beautiful memories.

There are many outstanding photoshoot locations in Birmingham and the West Midlands area, including Birmingham Botanical Gardens, where we have done many wedding shoots. Check out our guide for wedding photoshoots in Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

Post-Ceremony Celebrations: Dancing and Doli

After the ceremony, the celebrations truly kicked off. The doli (departure of the bride) was an emotional moment as she bid farewell to her family to start a new chapter.

Manor Grove, Handsworth, Birmingham, served as the venue for the wedding reception.

The couple’s main table was a masterpiece of elegance, draped in lush greenery and vibrant red roses. Every table sparkled with silver candlesticks and crisp white settings. The hall was alive with warmth and grandeur, as glowing chandeliers and intricate floral arrangements made the venue outstanding.

The couple made a grand entrance, sparking cheers and excitement from everyone around. The DJ’s Punjabi beats and live dhol brought the room alive with vibrant energy and celebration.

The reception was a lively affair complete with heartfelt speeches and the first dance. The dance floor was packed with energetic guests and vibrant dancing to Punjabi, Gujarati, and Bollywood music. We captured all the infectious energy—the joyful twirling, the heartfelt speeches, and the heartfelt embraces.
